The Decision Support Unit (DSU) is commissioned by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to provide:

  • technical support to evaluation programmes;
  • advanced methodological development for all types of health technologies, including pharmaceuticals, medical and diagnostic technologies and related products;
  • educational support;
  • advanced methodological, analytical and other ad hoc support to NICE and its independent advisory bodies on the assessment of medicines and medical technologies;
  • quality assurance of economic models.

The DSU provides advice and support to NICE.  Our outputs do not constitute NICE policy.

The DSU is run by the University of Sheffield.  We also have a network of members at the University of York, University of Leicester, University of Bristol, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and University of Exeter.

The DSU Director is Prof Allan Wailoo. The Deputy Director is Dr Sarah Davis.
